Oncoplastic surgery is the application of plastic surgery techniques to repair and reconstruct defects which result from the excision of cancers. The classic example is the reconstruction of breasts after operations for breast cancer. There are a variety of methods by which this is done (see section on Breast Reconstruction). They were developed by Plastic Surgeons and there are Plastic Surgeons who have a long experience and detailed knowledge of Breast Reconstruction procedures.
But oncoplastic surgery includes plastic surgical reconstruction for a wide spectrum of defects secondary to cancer removal. These range from simple skin grafts through to very advanced and complicated flaps. It was Dr. Newton’s good fortune to work with Dr. Bernard O’Brien, the Surgeon who invented Microvascular surgery for reconstruction and Dr. Newton performed the first Free Flap operations here in Newcastle.
