Eyes

Our eyes are said to be the windows to our souls. Indeed they are the first and most important part of our face that others look at. They convey so much about us and our emotions. The whole complex of our eyes, from our eyebrows down to our cheeks is vitally important in how others perceive us.

Correction of upper lid excess (Blepharoplasty)

Over time, the skin around the eyes stretches, losing its natural elasticity – a condition that is made worse as excess fat and tissue build up in and around the eyelids and by dropping of the brows. In addition to their impact on the appearance, drooping eyelids may also obscure a person’s peripheral vision, creating a potential hazard.

Procedure

Eyelid surgery is less invasive than many other facial procedures. Through incisions hidden in the crease of the eye, Dr. Newton trims away excess skin muscle and fat and also repositions muscles around the eye if needed. The incisions are then closed, and the eyelid surgery is complete.  Dr Newton will often ruse the fat as a graft and transfix the eyebrow to enhance the overall appearance of the whole eye/brow complex. He refers to this as his “Vogue Blepharoplasty”. The procedure may be combined with a more formal brow or face lift as part of a more comprehensive treatment plan.

Recovery

Most of Dr. Newton’s patients in the Newcastle area are able to return home from the hospital the day after eyelid surgery. They will need to return for a follow-up appointment after one week. There are no stitches to remove, and most are able to return to work after two weeks, but it will take as long as two months to see the final results.

Results

Patients like the look of their new eyes. They feel and look fresher. They say the world is literally  brighter. Makeup is less difficult.

Costs

Every patient is individually assessed and Dr. Newton’s fee will reflect the type and complexity of the procedure required.

At your consultation with Dr. Newton you will discuss the costs with our office manager. The costs will be explained and you will receive a detailed written costing. If a rebate is applicable it will be clearly defined in your costing.

Risks

There are very few significant risks of eyelid surgery, but one must be noted. Extremely rarely patients have lost the sight of an eye in the early post-op period after eyelid surgery. This has not happened to any of Dr Newton’s patients.

Correction of eyebrow position and shape

Eyebrows frame the eye. They come in a variety of shapes and thicknesses. For some people the shape does not enhance the eye, but can make a patient look sad or even angry. A nice eyebrow shape is one which starts lowish on the inner brow, curves upwards for 2/3 of its length before turning softly back down for the last 1/3.

Procedure

The procedure for brows used to be a brow lift. This used to be a major open operation. It changed to a closed operation called an endoscopic brow lift some years ago. More recently it has become a closed and occasionally endoscopic operation aimed not at just lifting the brow but at reshaping it with some lifting. Now the procedure is relatively simple, involving incisions made just above the hairline and dissection down to the eyebrows at the bone level. The brow is then lifted in a subtle way, as much to reshape it as to lift it, with the lift being more in the outer half of the brow. It is done under anaesthesia and often in conjunction with an upper eyelid operation.

Recovery

This less invasive operation is quicker to recover from than prior operations. There will be swelling and some bruising but these resolve over two weeks in most cases.

Results

Results are much more normal than before. A natural and eye enhancing appearance is the general outcome.

Risks

The general risks of surgery apply. Specific risks are few, but include nerve damage and unevenness.

Correction of lower lid excess

Bags under the eyes is a concern for many people. They are essentially a hernia ion of fat which should sit inside the bone rim of the eye socket. This fat bulges forward from behind the muscle of the lower lid.

Procedure

Bulging lower lids require surgery to the fat of the lower lid. This is generally approached through a lower lid incision just below the lashes. The muscle of the lid is opened and surgery to the fat is performed. Dr Newton prefers not to remove the fat, but to move it down and into the upper cheek. He may have to remove some fat however. The muscle is repaired and tightened and some excess skin is removed before sewing up.

Recovery

Recovery is about 2-3 weeks after lower lid Blepharoplasty. There will be some swelling and bruising. The sutures will dissolve.

Results

Results are generally very good and in some cases can be remarkable.

Costs

Every patient is individually assessed and Dr. Newton’s fee will reflect the type and complexity of the procedure required.

Risks

The main risks include pull-down of the lid and blindness. Both are extremely rare.

Correction of lower lid position

Lower eyelids can shorten and pull away from the eyeball. This is often the result of sun damage. It can be distressing , with weeping and dryness of the eye. It doesn’t look good either.

Procedure

The operation may involve 2 components. One is a release of the skin off the underlying muscle and a skin graft to fill the shortage of skin The other is a tightening of the lid in a sideways direction.

Recovery

Recovery is several weeks. This is because the graft has to settle in and the swelling has to go down.

Results

There is a significant improvement of the function of the lid and with that , the comfort and appearance of the eye.

Costs

Every patient is individually assessed and Dr. Newton’s fee will reflect the type and complexity of the procedure required.

Risk

The main risks relate to skin graft take.

Excision and reconstruction of eyelid cancers

Cancers do occur on the eyelids. They are more common on the lower lid and are very common at the inner angle of the eye, where it merges with the nose. Surgery is a very good way to treat them but needs to take into account the very important anatomy and function of the eyelid.

Procedure

Surgery is rarely simply in cases of cancer of the eyelid. It will almost always involve a flap or a skin graft. It can involve a reconstruction of the lid itself. It may even involve more than one operation. It is important that it is done by a surgeon with good plastic surgical experience.

Recovery

Recovery will vary according to the extent of the surgery required. It may be as quick as 2 weeks or it may be considerably longer especially if it involves more than one operation.

Results

Results are generally very satisfactory, preserving the function and appearance of the eyelid. This does depend on the nature and extent of the surgery required of course.

Costs

Every patient is individually assessed and Dr. Newton’s fee will reflect the type and complexity of the procedure required.

Risks

The main risks involve the position, function and appearance of the lid.

Brow lift

For those who do not need or do not want a full face lift but still want to correct wrinkles and drooping skin in the forehead and brow, a brow lift may be the answer. Patients with a hooded, drooping brow and frown lines in the forehead typically benefit from this procedure.

Procedure

The brow lift is less involved than a full face lift, with smaller incisions made behind the hairline, through which the skin is lifted and tightened. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia.

Recovery

Patients are generally able to return to work after two or three weeks, though full recovery may take as long as three months.

Costs

Every patient is individually assessed and Dr. Newton’s fee will reflect the type and complexity of the procedure required.
