Correction of prominent ears (“Ear Pinning” or  Otoplasty)

Ear pinning is one of the few cosmetic plastic surgery procedures that can be performed on young children. Many concerned parents choose ear pinning  so that their children will not be teased at school, but the procedure can also be performed on adults. When a child has prominent ears, the key to when it is best done is when he or she expresses concern about their ears and has some understanding of the operation and its benefits. This makes it a lot less traumatic for the child. Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Newton can correct ears that protrude too far from the head, or appear asymmetrical.

Using advanced surgical techniques, Dr. Newton can correct ears that protrude too far from the head, are oversized, or appear asymmetrical.

Procedure

During ear pinning surgery, Dr. Newton reshapes the cartilage through a discreet incision behind the ear. The main component of the surgery is to then reshape the ear cartilage. This allows the ear to sit back in a very natural way so that it does not look as if it has been operated on. He does not excise cartilage as excess cartilage is not the problem. Some skin is usually removed and the wound closed.

Recovery

In the case of a child, a good cuddle from Mum or Dad as soon as they wake up is just what is needed. One of the chief advantages of ear pinning is that it entails a shorter recovery time than most cosmetic surgical procedures. Patients need to wear protective compression bandages for up to two weeks; these bandages promote quick healing and help to ensure optimal results. Though some minor swelling may persist, patients at Dr. Newton’s Newcastle-area practice who undergo ear pinning typically see significant benefits from the surgery as soon as bandages are removed.

Results

This has to be one of the most rewarding operations we do. As a surgeon you can see the immediate and significant improvement in appearance of the ears on the operating table.  The patients don’t see their ears for about 2 weeks but are invariable happy.

Procedure

The Procedure to correct large earlobes is relatively simple. It involves lobe excision and repair with a small flap. It is generally done under local anaesthetic in Dr Newton’s rooms.

Recovery

Recovery is about one week. The sutures are dissolving and the ear lobe will look good at one week. Wearing earrings takes a while however and the ears should not be pierced for about 3 months.

Excision and repair of ear cancers

Ears, like noses, are a very common place to develop a skin cancer. People rarely wear brimmed hats and often forget to put sunscreen on their ears. The common cancers are BCC and SCC.

Procedure

The procedure will vary depending on the pathology o f the cancer and its extent. Obviously it is important to consider the special anatomy of the ear and its cosmetic and functional relevance. Simple excision through skin grafting and / or flap surgery to partial amputation may be needed.
